I had been asking unenthusiastically for attachments to my Kitchen Aid stand mixer for a few years and this last Christmas my husband came through and bought me the ice cream maker. I was so excited but not as excited as he was, he wanted me to break it out right away. Well I didn't I waited, waited for berry season and boy am I happy I did. The instructions can seem a little daunting at first but I followed it exactly. I made the version of French Vanilla listed in the book that comes with the ice cream maker. It takes about 2 days to make because the bowl has to be in the freezer for 18 hours. So after I put the bowl in the freezer there are cooking steps and non-cooking steps to the process and it includes heavy cream, 1/2and1/2, salt, sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla, and after it is all mixed it has to chill for at least 8 hours.
It looks amazing as it slowly freezes, it filled the whole room with the smells of vanilla, it starts out thin and gets firmer the longer it is mixed I let it run for 15 minutes.
After it was mixed it has to be stored and put in the freezer for 4-6 hours, really we are lucky it made it to the freezer.
We had some after lunch with some fresh strawberry sauce I made yesterday and oh my it is divine. Cold and sweet and just the right thing for these hot days that soar into the upper 80s, I think with the ice cream maker in the freezer, and the kid's play pool up in the backyard we are ready to take on the summer...I cannot wait for the blackberries!
