A Simple Woman's Daybook

A Simple Woman's Daybook
{From now on, once a week I will try to post a Simple Woman's Daybook entry. Join in here.}

Outside my window:: It's cloudy here in the northwest but not currently raining which is a nice break. The kids were both out in the backyard before breakfast-I love that about our backyard.

I am thinking:: I am thinking about spring cleaning, so much to be done. Our garage is still in post-accident status which causes my husband undo stress, so when he comes home Thursday (yay!) we will be cleaning it out top to bottom, and carting off loads to the Goodwill. I went through the kids toy boxes yesterday-one of my favourite things, having a large bag of toys to give away makes me smile. How willing my kids are to part with toys they have outgrown or no longer use makes the smile so much bigger. I love teaching them that their fond memories of times and things are in their hearts and not in the "things" they have.

I am thankful:: for the change in the weather, the windows and backdoor open letting in the fresh spring air reminds us all that no matter how long the winter is it will end, and no matter how much rain the sun will follow.  The changes in the seasons are such a special time of year. I love how our family's rhythm changes, the cozy socks and extra blankets get stowed, the heavy coats washed and put away, the outdoor things find their way to the backyard, quilts, bubbles, jump-ropes, and chalk.  Iain and Finn headed outside in their pajamas first thing, so happy for spring.

In the kitchen:: today is bread day, two happy loaves rising in the big yellow bowl that was my grandmothers.  Dinner tonight, I am thinking chicken noodle soup, soon the hot soups of winter and fall will get a makeover and become fresh Greek salads and barbecue on the back deck.

I am creating:: I am working on a sweater for Finnley a short sleeved light spring weight sweater in a bright turquoise with light purple trim, pictures to follow. Also a gift is in the works-have to wait for that one, and orders have been being filled as quickly as I can get to them.  I have one large order from before the accident that fills me with guilt when I think of how behind it is.  I have also started gathering patterns for Finn's summer clothes, she will be 7 in August and I'm just not ready for the "big girl" clothes the stores think appropriate for a 7 year old girl.

I am wondering::  Iain's 5th birthday is in a few days and I am wondering where the years went. He was small and cuddly and cooing only a few days ago. Now he is big and independent and so full of energy and excitement. No matter how I long for his tiny grasping fingers and the soft baby smell on his neck, I have to remember the best is everyday with him in it.

I am hoping::  I am hoping for a sunny warm spring,and that I find just the right berries this year for making jam, our cupbard is running low.

I am looking forward to::  Robert being home Thursday, he will be home for my birthday, and Iain's, it has been a few years since he has been home to celebrate with us.

I am learning::  I am learning everyday how to live with less. As the home gets it's yearly spring purge picking up the objects and pondering their usefulness and value is in itself a learning experience. Learning to live with less is a daily journey, loosening the hold stuff can have over you, and seriously considering the things you bring into your home.

Around the house::  Finnley is at school, Pixie is sleeping peacefully on the sofa, Iain is drawing letters and pictures he wants to mail to grandma later today, and when I have finished my entry here I will be cleaning under the kitchen sink, today is a quiet day.

A favorite quote for the day::  “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
Mae West

One of my favorite things::  the Puccini opera Turandot, in particular Nessun Dorma one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera.  The sounds of opera, the emotion of opera has always given me goosebumps, and I love the sound of it filling our house.

A few plans for the rest of the week::  clean, clean, clean, and then play, play, play

A peak into my day::
